Pearl River County's new Fire Safety House Trailer is used to educate children on what steps to take if a fire or severe weather should occur. The $35,960.00 trailer which has been in use since January 2003, was received through a Federal Emergency Management Agency Fire Act Grant bill and applied for through North Central Volunteer Fire Department. Besides learning how to escape a burning house, children also are taught what to do in the event of severe weather, such as where to seek shelter inside a house, school, shopping centers and outdoors.
While the Fire Safety House shows children how to protect themselves in the event of a fire or severe weather, families should have alternate evacuation plans and a place to meet outside.
The trailer has a kitchenette with a stove, to show children safety steps while around the stove and an upstairs room, to show children ways to get down from upstairs for those who have a bed room upstairs. A control room with a TV Monitor so whoever is in the control room can see what is going on anywhere in the trailer. Children are more than eager to talk about what they had learned going through the Fire Safety and Severe Weather Trailer.
The Fire Safety House which has had over 7,000 children go through it now, is available to all organizations, schools and groups that are interested in the county, in conjunction with your local fire department. If you would like to have the Fire Safety House at your event or school please contact the Emergency Management Agency and we will be more than happy to set up a time and date for you with your local fire department so that all our children get the message about fire safety and severe weather preparedness.

Pearl River County - Board of Supervisors
It is our hope that our children get the best fire safety and severe weather education that they possibly can. This is why the Pearl River County "Children are First" Fire Safety and Severe Weather Trailer is made available to any school or organization in Pearl River County to include the cities of Picayune and Poplarville. We hope that every child can receive this important fire prevention and severe weather training to help make their lives, homes and county a safer place.
